Yesterday, one of our family's beloved pups went to heaven. He lived a good, long life, and is greatly loved by all of us. He was like the big brother of the puppy pack, and definitely the most well-trained of them all. I've truly never met a dog so well-trained. He was also the first to show me the power of puppy love. We've all heard dogs referred to as "man's best friend." But I think dogs become more than our best friends. They're truly members of our family and they teach us a lot about love. Grant was my aunt's dog, and I didn't understand just how special our bond with our dogs can be until I was in my darkest moments and he slept with me all night. It meant so much to me, I wrote about it in Pocket Full of Dreams.
I feel like dogs are angels on earth who provide us humans with love we need when we don't realize how much we need it. They are there for us when we're healing through trauma, when we're lonely, stressed, trying to find our purpose in life. I don't know what it is about them, but it's like they have a sixth sense for love and compassion. I'm so grateful for the pups in my life, and I wonder if we couldn't all learn a few lessons in love from them.
