My company, Red Balloon Station, is now open for copywriting and brand strategy services and I'm really excited about this. For the past couple of years I've been quietly doing some freelance copywriting, and it was originally meant to be a side hustle to make extra cash while I worked on scripts and producing film and television projects. I genuinely fell in love with it because for me it's like another platform for storytelling; but I still didn't want to be loud about it, because I had this fear that if people knew I had this side hustle, I might look like I was failing at my other endeavors. Then I started thinking about all the doctors I've met who found themselves producing films (while still being doctors!). One woman I know is a full-time anesthesiologist and also produces a couple films a year. While yes, these people have had successful careers before pursuing other avenues, I've said this before and I still strongly believe that we live in a time where you aren't bound to ONE career. Moreover, I realized that everything I do comes down to one common thread--writing. And a writer writes. Writing has always been one of my greatest strengths and passions, and to have the opportunities to write in various mediums is more than I could ever have dreamed of. I feel like God knows me and has been slowly revealing my destiny to me and guiding the way through my colorful and unorthodox career path. That being said, I feel like I get a lot of confused looks from friends when I mention copywriting. What is copywriting? Well, let me break down the basics for you. As a child I always dreamed of being an author, and maybe even a journalist, but I never dreamed I'd work on scripts and write my own, nor write songs that would be featured in films. I also never knew I could find so much joy in writing website pages, marketing emails, and ads (i.e., copywriting). Interestingly, my legal education and experiences in the entertainment industries have actually been the perfect blend to writing creative and strategic copy. So, what is copywriting and what can I do for you and your brand and business?
According to Oxford Dictionaries, copywriting is: "The act or occupation of writing text for the purpose of advertising or other forms of marketing." This definition reminds me of "Mad Men" and to put it in layman's terms I oft will describe myself as a "marketing writer." It's more than just writing ads and catchy lines though. Copywriting is a craft. When you write effective copy, you're telling a story and making connections with your audience. Similar to how I write and consult on scripts to ensure authenticity and marketability, I do so with copy. Effective copy is your business' and brand's voice. When people visit your website, effective copy will set the tone of your brand and relate to your audience. It's informational and engaging. Emails, another example of copy, are an incredibly effective tool in further engaging an audience and building a loyal customer base. I've come to love writing email funnels--a series of emails that lead customers and clients to make the purchase, sign up for your services, or take other action that you want them to take. This is one area where I feel companies can really shine, share their stories, and make authentic connections with their audience. Like I said, copywriting is another form of storytelling for me. I love it because it beautifully marries my versatile experience. When I studied for the bar, I learned that it's more important to be able to write persuasively than to get the law exactly right. And copywriting requires persuasive writing. So, law school taught me the art of persuasive writing, while the entertainment industries have taught me how to use words to paint pictures. The movie industry, specifically, taught me that there are movies made to be art and movies made to sell. They are not always one and the same. Knowing the difference and knowing how to balance and blend the two is an art form in and of itself. And that's what I bring to the copy I write. A strong copywriter innately a strong brand strategist, too, and I loooove strategizing creative ways to grow brands and communicate their messages. Writing the story is one thing, then figuring out how to get it out into the world and connect with who you want it to connect with as another. The nerd in me gets excited about all of this. Some other forms of marketing that require copy, include:
One thing I love about copywriting is that every business in every industry requires copy. So, I've had clients come to me from all sorts of places, and like the nerd I am, I love learning about things that would never normally cross my world...like blockchains, or eco-landscaping. What excites me more, is that in making my copywriting business "official," I've especially set out to work with other mamapreneurs and companies that share my same values--companies that practice social and sustainable responsibility. That doesn't mean if you're not a mom or company with fully transparent social and sustainable practices, that I won't work with you; but I believe strongly that when we support mothers, we support our entire community. And we live in a time in which companies cannot afford to ignore social and sustainable responsibilities, so I hope to help companies make this a norm across the board.
