I took this book with me on vacation and devoured it each night. I just felt like I knew Maame, because I related to her on so many levels as a daughter of immigrants.
MAAME is about a 25-year-old British Ghanian woman who has been the dutiful daughter that her family relies on. She's the main caretaker for her sick father, especially while her mother spends a year at a time in Ghana running a family motel. But her mom is coming back, and it's time for Maame to finally move out and live her own life. But who even is Maddie or Madelyn, as she's more commonly known by her given name (Maame is a family nickname)? And we, as the readers, are invited into her world as she figures out womanhood, career, friendship, love, grief, and identity. It's funny, it's raw, it's real, it's awkward, it's heart-tugging, it's multicultural, it's culturally insightful, it's growing up, it's life as a woman. If you're looking for a good read, I highly recommend reading MAAME. If I didn't have child to take care of, I probably would've finished it in a day or two. But even when I finished, I wanted to immediately re-read it. I'm definitely looking forward to Jessica Georgeo's next works.
